The True Story Behind the Long Island Serial Killer Case

The Gilgo Beach case, which the media dubbed the “Long Island Serial Killer” case, traces back to December 2010 when authorities discovered multiple bodies on Gilgo Beach. Over time, they unearthed

ten sets of remains, with at least four of the victims being women, raising suspicions of one or more serial killers using the area as a dumping ground.

The initial discovery was made when a Suffolk County police officer and his dog stumbled upon the remains of Melissa Barthelemy. Subsequent searches led to the bodies of three other young women, all wrapped in burlap and found within a small radius, buried in the marsh on Gilgo Beach.

The victims were later identified as Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Tragically, all four women had worked as online escorts and had gone missing between 2007 and 2010.

Shannan Gilbert’s Enigmatic Case

The Long Island Serial Killer case took an even more perplexing turn when it became associated with the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert. Shannan, also an escort, vanished after visiting a client she had met on Craigslist in the gated community of Oak Beach on Long Island. Her body was eventually found in nearby Oak Beach on December 13, 2011.

Despite the discovery of the other victims during the search for Shannan, the police do not believe her case is linked to the serial killings. They suspect she might have gotten lost in the marshland and died due to exposure or accidental drowning.
