Murray was born on the 7th of July 1933, in Eketahuna. He later moved to Auckland where he graduated and attended Avondale College.

There he also participated in rugby matches and during one of his matches he suffered a severe left arm injury due to which he stopped playing rugby.

But this did not stop Murray from sports, the next year he looked up to racing, and there began his career as he was coached by Arthur Lydiard in 1951.

Until now it was revealed that Murray passed away while he was at his house on Waiheke Island on the 30th of November 2022. Other than that it was revealed that he passed away on Wednesday aged 89.

Murray also won the first Empire Games gold medal in Cardiff with 13 min 15 seconds over three miles of the run and four years later he also took the gold medal from the same gold medal competition.

In 1964 he also took part in the Olympic Games where he failed to win but he ran for a solid seventh over 10,000 m in the 5000m.
